"You need to clean up the mess you made, Adam."
"It's too hard for me," he whined.
"You start and I'll help."
Adam sat down on the living room floor and picked up a few Cheerios and put them in the box.
Transfixed, Diane watched the scene playing out in front of her. For every Cheerio Adam placed in the box, his mother did a handful.
"He's not much help at this age, is he?" Diane said.
"He's doing as much as he can. When he does as much as he can, then I step in."
Diane watched this for a few minutes and then the thought gradually came. Diane repeated the words: "He's doing as much as he can, and then you step in."
